Dan has been making pottery for over 25 years, after majoring in Pottery at an Art College. The influence of Chinese and Japanese historical pottery as well as 20th century English Studio pottery is evident in Dan’s elegant and robust use of design and form.

Dan combines old-world techniques with contemporary design and decoration to produce beautiful functional and one of a kind soda-glazed pottery. Soda-glazing is achieved by introducing a mixture of sodium and water into the 1200 Celsius kiln which causes the sodium mixture to vapourize. The vapours and flame flow over and around the pottery, enhancing the surfaces with flashes of colour and texture. Dan uses these nuances from the kiln firing to evoke the natural beauty of the Madawaska Valley.

Hill pottery is open during the Studio Tour weekend or by appointment. Dan’s Pottery is available year - round at The Wilno Garden Gallery in the picturesque village of Wilno.
